Vaccines, starting in the first few weeks, protect your cat against otherwise harmful diseases.
Getting your pet vaccinated is an important part of their wellness plan. There are a range of preventable illnesses you can protect your pet against by getting them vaccinated. In addition to helping your furry family member fight against an infection, they also safeguard the rest of the pet population from contagious diseases.
Vaccines work by introducing your pet to a low dosage of a pathogen (disease-causing germ) to build their immunity against it. As such, if your pet is exposed to the disease, they would have already built up antibodies to defend them against it. Vaccines are heavily tested before they’re administered to your pet to ensure they’re safe and work effectively. Typically, your pet won’t have any side effects but in some cases, they could have a mild fever or some symptoms associated with the disease they’re vaccinated against.
Depending on the vaccine and how your pet reacts to it, they could develop full or partial immunity. Some vaccines require regular boosters to help maintain your pet’s immunity. Getting your pet vaccinated provides them with more protection compared to if they were not. The goal of vaccines is to build herd immunity, which means that if as many pets as possible are vaccinated against a disease, it is less likely it will spread and infect the pet population.
Vaccines are categorized into core and non-core. Core vaccines are recommended for all pets whereas non-core are specific to your pet’s risk of developing some diseases. Your pet should start getting vaccinated in their first few weeks of life. If you’re interested in creating a vaccine plan for your pet, please contact us at 403-288-7299.
