Spaying and neutering provide numerous benefits, including improved health and behaviour.
Overpopulation is a huge problem, especially for shelters that can’t find homes for unwanted furry friends. Spaying and neutering helps control the pet population so that treated male pets can no longer impregnate female pets, and females become infertile. These procedures also cause several health benefits for pets who undergo them.
Before your pet undergoes the procedure, our veterinary team will put them under general anesthesia. The purpose of anesthesia is to put your pet in a deep sleep so they don’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. For female pets, we remove their ovaries and uterus through an incision in their abdomen. After making a small cut in front of your male pet’s scrotum, we remove each testicle and tie off the tube that produces its blood supply. Our veterinary team carefully monitors your pet’s heart and breathing rate throughout the procedure to ensure their body is responding well to it. Unspayed female pets can go through multiple heat cycles every year, which means they could give birth to dozens of litters throughout their life. Spaying not only eliminates their ability to get pregnant but also reduces behaviours like vocalizing or acting aggressively. In addition, spaying your female pet decreases their risk of developing uterine, ovarian, and mammary gland cancer. The risk decreases the most for pets who have the surgery before they go into heat for the first time.
Neutering stops some of the problematic behaviour your male pet shows when they’re ready to reproduce. They tend to be more aggressive before the procedure, attempting to bite or hump more objects. Also, they tend to spray their urine to mark their territory, which can leave an unpleasant odour. In addition, after the surgery, the risk of testicular or prostate cancer drops significantly.
